Prolific in India: Why You Cannot Sign Up, and 4 Platforms That Do Accept You

No, you cannot sign up for Prolific from India. India is not on Prolific’s supported country list, which we rechecked on 29 August 2026. Eligibility is based on where you live, your ID has to be issued by that country, and a VPN will not get you through verification. Four platforms below do accept Indian workers.

Can you actually sign up for Prolific from India?

No. Prolific’s participant help centre publishes the full list of supported countries and India is not on it. The list runs to around fifty entries: the obvious ones like the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and Germany, plus Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Brazil and Mexico. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria and most of the rest of the world sit outside it.

Three rules decide it, and all three work against someone sitting in India:

• Residence, not nationality. An Indian passport holder living in Singapore or Manchester can join. An Indian citizen in Pune cannot.
• ID issued by your country of residence. A valid, unexpired government document from the country on your profile. An Indian passport plus a claimed UK address fails on the spot.
• Phone number country must match your ID and your stated residence.

Enter an Indian address during signup and you simply cannot proceed. There is no appeal either: Prolific’s support says plainly that it cannot override these requirements or make exceptions.

Is India really excluded for not being in the OECD?

This is the line every listicle repeats, and it is close enough to sound authoritative while being wrong in the way that matters. Prolific’s researcher documentation says most participants live in OECD member countries, with a few exceptions. The exceptions are the interesting part. The OECD has 38 members. Cross the two lists and the tidy story falls apart.

OECD membership is a rough proxy Prolific uses loosely, not the rule. Its stated reason for excluding certain countries is that it cannot verify identity documents there with enough confidence. Whether that holds up for a country running Aadhaar is a fair question, but it will not change because you emailed them.

There is a real contradiction inside Prolific’s own documentation, and we are flagging it because quietly picking the convenient half would be dishonest. The participant help page does not list India as supported. The researcher help page, written for the people who buy samples, lists India among 14 countries with what it calls small participant populations, alongside Argentina, Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. Romania sits on both lists at once, which suggests the two pages are maintained separately and never reconciled.

The reading that fits both: a small number of India resident accounts do exist, almost certainly people who joined when the rules were looser or who moved countries, and researchers are told they can buy a thin sample here. What happens if you use a VPN to get around it?

You lose the money. That is the short version, and it is worse than simply being blocked. Prolific’s VPN guidance is blunt: participants should not use a VPN, iCloud Private Relay, proxies or similar services. It lists three consequences, and the third is the one that hurts:

• Error messages when you try to load the site
• Studies stop appearing in your dashboard, so you earn nothing anyway
• Your ability to cash out gets blocked, which means work you already finished sits in an account you cannot withdraw from

Add the ID rule on top. A VPN changes your apparent IP address. It does not issue you a Portuguese passport. The usual sequence: sign up on a VPN, complete a few studies, hit verification, get the account placed on hold, find that support cannot help. You have then donated several unpaid hours to a research study.

Is the Prolific waitlist worth joining?

It costs five minutes, so join it. Just do not build a plan around it. Prolific’s own description of the waitlist is refreshingly unencouraging: invitations are not first come first served, they depend on researcher demand for particular demographics, and while some people are invited within hours, others wait months or longer. No guarantee of access at all. Join it, close the tab, and go apply somewhere that will give you work this month.

What would Prolific pay you anyway, if you could join?

Worth knowing before the fear of missing out sets in. Prolific enforces a minimum hourly reward of £6 or $8 and recommends researchers pay at least £9 or $12 an hour. Participants are paid in GBP or USD through PayPal.

Read that against what is already open to you. TELUS Digital advertises India rater roles at around $8 an hour, which is the Prolific floor. Appen search evaluation runs roughly $14 to $18, comfortably above Prolific’s recommended rate. Prolific is a decent, well run platform with a fair reputation. It is not a different economic league, and the version in your head where survey takers in London earn fortunes is not real. Stop hunting for a Prolific workaround. There isn’t one, and every video promising a method is either out of date or selling a VPN affiliate link. A sane order of operations:

• Apply to TELUS Digital first. India specific roles mean the eligibility question is settled before you start. Expect a qualification exam.
• Apply to Appen the same day, because both run waiting queues and doing them one at a time just adds weeks.
• Treat the assessment as the real interview. Most Indian applicants are rejected at the exam, not at the country check.
