Amazon MTurk India ends with the platform itself. Amazon will permanently close Mechanical Turk on 30 September 2026, and that is the last day a HIT can be submitted. Requesters then have until 30 October 2026 to approve work and pay bonuses, and transaction history stays visible until 28 January 2027.
Is Amazon MTurk India still worth joining?
No, and for once the reason is not a judgement call about pay rates. It is a date. The notice on mturk.com says the platform closes permanently on 30 September 2026, which at the time of writing is 19 days away. Signing up now buys you an account review, a tax form and about a fortnight.
Amazon stopped taking new customers on 30 July 2026, TechCrunch reported, and announced the full closure on 25 August 2026 after 21 years. If you have landed here from an article that still explains how to register, check its date. A great many MTurk India guides were written when this was live advice and have been quietly aging ever since.
What are the exact dates, and what happens on each one?
Here is the whole timetable in one place, with the source for every row, checked on 11 September 2026. Most of these dates are not the closure date, which is the part people miss.
| Date | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 30 July 2026 | Amazon stops accepting new customers for Mechanical Turk | TechCrunch reported |
| 25 August 2026 | Amazon announces the permanent closure | notice on mturk.com |
| 30 September 2026 | Platform closes. Last day to submit a HIT. Unsubmitted HITs expire | MTurk closure FAQ |
| 30 October 2026 | Last day for requesters to approve or reject work and to award bonuses. Work left unapproved after 30 days is auto approved | MTurk closure FAQ |
| 28 January 2027 | Transaction history stops being available | MTurk closure FAQ |
Two things in that table are worth reading twice. Work you submit on 29 September can still be approved and paid in October, so the closure does not vaporise your last week. And unapproved work is auto approved after the standard 30 days, which means a requester who simply walks away does not cost you the money.

Paisa kaise nikaalein before the platform closes?
This section is written straight, because it is the part with a deadline on it.
Amazon’s own guidance is that payments after closure follow your existing disbursement schedule, so the thing that matters is whether that schedule exists. Open the Worker Portal, go to Account Settings, and confirm three things: a payment method is set, a payment frequency is set, and the details on it are current. The MTurk closure FAQ is explicit that workers should verify payment preferences before the close. An account with no payment method set is an account with nowhere to send the money.
Do the check now rather than in the last week. Several workers report elsewhere that account verification queries can take days to resolve, and after 30 September there is no platform left to appeal to. Also pull anything you need from your transaction history before 28 January 2027, because that is the last date it is guaranteed to be there. If you have been filing around this income, our note on Section 44ADA covers how service income from foreign platforms is usually presented.
How did Indian workers actually get paid on MTurk?
Here the sources genuinely contradict each other, and rather than pick the convenient one, here is what each says.
The MTurk Worker help page today tells international workers they can transfer earnings to an Amazon.com gift card, and that eligible international workers also get the option of a United States bank account. It does not name an Indian bank option anywhere on that page. The documented history of the platform records cash payments for Indian workers introduced in 2010 and describes India as the exception among international workers, who otherwise received gift certificates only. The TurkerView thread from 2019 has workers reporting that bank disbursement was being rolled out to non United States workers across roughly two dozen countries including India, at a transfer fee of 0.8 per cent plus 0.20 euro. Third party guides written more recently insist that gift cards are the only realistic option from India.
They cannot all be right, and with 19 days left the argument is academic. The only source that matters is your own Account Settings page, which shows the methods your specific account is offered. Go and look rather than trusting any article, this one included.
One thing is not in dispute. An Amazon.com gift card balance cannot be moved to an Amazon.in account, and spending it on physical goods from India means shipping and import charges that eat a large part of it. Gift card balance is the worst of the options, so if a bank transfer is available on your account, that is the one to set.
What do workers who used MTurk actually report?
We read ten dated reviews on MTurk’s Trustpilot page along with the 2019 worker forum thread above and a published worker survey. These are individual accounts, not a measurement of what the platform paid.
The Indian accounts describe a long decline rather than a sudden problem. A reviewer in India on 21 March 2023 says they earned over $600 a month between 2012 and 2017 and that earnings had fallen away since 2018. A reviewer in India on 17 September 2020 reports being rejected with no reason given. That shape matches the documented history of the platform, where India grew to around 30 per cent of workers by May 2019 and roughly half of those remaining by early 2023, a rising share of a shrinking platform.
The complaints that recur across countries are about account access, not about rates. A reviewer in the United States on 24 March 2026 reports a suspension with no explanation after years of activity. A reviewer in Pakistan on 3 March 2025 reports a block with earnings withheld. A reviewer in Canada on 14 February 2025 reports a rejection with no explanation and no further reply from support. The page carried 78 reviews and an average of 2.7 out of 5 on 11 September 2026, with two thirds of them at one star.
On pay the accounts and the official picture do not conflict so much as measure different things. The Fair Crowd Work survey of 25 to 100 verified workers in 2016 and 2017 found a median of 8.67 euro an hour, but its own authors note the respondents were mostly professional or semi professional Turkers, which is not who a first timer in India would have been. Where everyone agrees, including Amazon’s decision to close, is that the work thinned out.

Kya MTurk ke alternatives India ke liye hain?
Yes, and several of them are the reason MTurk is closing. The task work moved to platforms built specifically for AI training. This is the state of play we verified on 28 August 2026 in our guide to which platforms actually accept India, which is where the detail on each one lives.
| Platform | Accepts India | Typical pay | Payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clickworker (LXT) | Yes, 150+ countries | Per task | PayPal, Payoneer, weekly |
| Appen (CrowdGen) | Yes, 200+ countries | $8 to $15 an hour entry | PayPal, Payoneer |
| TELUS Digital | Yes, India specific roles | About $8 an hour | PayPal, bank transfer |
| Outlier AI | Yes | Varies by project | PayPal, AirTM, ACH |
| DataAnnotation.tech | No, six countries only | Not applicable | Not applicable |
| Prolific | No, mostly OECD | Not applicable | Not applicable |
If you want money within the week, Clickworker has the lowest barrier and pays weekly. If you want the highest ceiling, Outlier is where specialist queues pay several times general work, though the assessments are genuinely hard. If you want something predictable, TELUS Digital runs India specific roles with a formal process. Our write up of Mercor, Alignerr and Handshake AI covers the newer wave that took the market MTurk left.
What does the closure say about online task work from India?
MTurk was the original version of this work and it lasted 21 years, which is longer than most things on the internet manage. It did not die because task work stopped existing. It died because the money moved to platforms that pay more for harder judgement, and because the cheap end of the work is now done by the models the harder end is training. A 2023 academic study in Switzerland found that up to 46 per cent of MTurk workers were using AI models to complete tasks, which is either an indictment or a career tip depending on where you are standing.
The practical reading for anyone in India is that the ladder has not been removed, it has been moved up a rung. Pure volume tasks are ending. Work that needs an actual opinion, a language, or a domain is what is left and it pays better. Our realistic online income ladder lays out where that starts, and which skills actually pay Indians on global platforms is the honest version of what to learn next.
Frequently asked questions
When exactly does Amazon MTurk close?
On 30 September 2026. That is the last day a HIT can be submitted, and any HIT still unsubmitted expires that day. Requesters then have until 30 October 2026 to approve or reject work and to award bonuses, and transaction history remains available until 28 January 2027.
Will I still be paid for work I submit in the last week?
Yes, according to Amazon’s own closure FAQ. Completed and approved HITs are paid out on your normal disbursement schedule, and work a requester leaves unapproved is auto approved after the standard 30 days. The one thing you must do is make sure a payment method and frequency are set in your Worker Portal account settings.
Kya ab bhi MTurk par account banana chahiye?
Nahi. The platform closes on 30 September 2026 and stopped taking new customers on 30 July 2026. A new worker account faces a review of up to a couple of business days, tax documentation and then a shutdown. The effort is better spent on a platform that will still exist in October.
Can Indian workers get MTurk earnings into an Indian bank account?
The sources disagree. The current MTurk worker help page names only an Amazon.com gift card and, for eligible international workers, a United States bank account. Worker forum posts from 2019 describe bank disbursement being extended to India, and the platform’s documented history records cash payments to Indian workers from 2010. Check your own account settings, because that is the only answer that applies to you.
MTurk band ho raha hai, toh iska alternative kya hai?
Clickworker, Appen through CrowdGen, TELUS Digital and Outlier AI all accept applicants from India, and that is where the work went. DataAnnotation.tech and Prolific do not accept India. Pay and acceptance change often, so treat any figure, including ours, as dated.
What happens to an Amazon.com gift card balance from India?
It stays on the Amazon.com account and cannot be moved to Amazon.in. Spending it from India means international shipping and import charges that consume a significant share of the value. If your account offers a bank transfer option, setting that before the closure is the better choice.
