Part Time Job Scam Pehchan: The 9 Signs That Give It Away

Young man on an Indian metro reading a part time job offer message on his phone

Part time job scam pehchan ka sabse pakka tareeka yeh hai: a real employer pays you, and you never pay them. If a part time job asks for a registration fee, a refundable security deposit, your PAN before any work exists, or tasks that move money through your bank account, it is a scam. Nine specific signs follow.

The people running these are not master criminals. They are running a script, and the script has barely changed in seven years. Once you have seen its shape you cannot unsee it, which is the entire point of this page. We have put the nine signs first, the police records that show the script in action second, and what to do if the money has already gone at the end.

Part time job scam pehchan: the 9 signs

Each row pairs what they say with what it actually means and the one check that settles it. You do not need all nine. One is enough.

What they sayWhat it meansThe check that settles it
Registration fee, security deposit, refundable haiThe fee is the business. There is no job behind it.Ask them to deduct it from your first payment. A real employer agrees. A scam refuses.

Spread of Indian rupee notes representing the small deposit a job scam asks for first
Small enough to risk, which is exactly why that figure was chosen.

Why does every single one of these ask for money first?

Because the fee is the product. Everything else is theatre built to make the fee feel reasonable: the offer letter, the employee ID, the group with two hundred cheerful members, the coordinator who calls you sir. All of it costs the operator nothing and exists to move you from suspicious to invested.

The tell is that the amounts start absurdly small. Rs 500 to register. Rs 2,000 refundable. Nobody hands over their savings to a stranger, but almost anybody will risk two thousand rupees on a maybe, and that is precisely the sum the script is calibrated to extract. The escalation comes later, dressed as your own progress.

What do the actual police and complaint records show?

This is testimony and public record, not a claim about any particular company. We read four dated records, two consumer complaints and two police cases, and set them beside each other to see whether the script really is one script.

  • Delhi, July 2026. A complainant was contacted on Telegram on 9 June 2026 and given fake review tasks for a food delivery brand, which paid out small amounts and built trust. On 2 July a second account moved them onto an investment scheme. They lost Rs 2,84,100 over UPI and IMPS. E-FIR No. 190/2026 was registered on 9 July at the Cyber Police Station, Central District, under sections 318(4) and 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Two men aged 20 and 21 from Jodhpur were later arrested for supplying the mule accounts, and police recovered four phones and a SIM card.
  • Uttar Pradesh. Nine people were booked after 42 job seekers were allegedly cheated of about Rs 49 lakh with promises of work abroad. Each applicant was asked for a registration and documentation fee of Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000. Same fee, larger promise.
  • Consumer complaint, February 2023. A complainant on Consumer Complaints Court describes a message offering Rs 50 per video liked. Small payments arrived first. Then came prepaid tasks rising from Rs 1,000 to over Rs 90,000, each promising a refund in ten minutes that never came. Rs 32,000 gone.
  • Consumer complaint, June 2019. A complaint on India Consumer Forum describes typing work advertised with no registration fee at all. After ID, PAN and a signature were collected, demands arrived for Rs 4,000 and then Rs 7,000 for work judged incomplete, followed by legal notices the complainant believed carried forged stamps.

Where they agree: the approach is always a message, the first ask is always small, the trivial task always pays before the real ask, and the refund is always ten minutes away. Where they disagree, and this is the part the checklists get wrong: the 2019 case took no fee up front at all. It collected documents first and turned the fee into a debt afterwards. So “they ask for money before you start” is a reliable sign when it is present, and its absence proves nothing.

The other thing worth noticing is the seven year gap. A complaint from 2019 and an FIR from July 2026 describe recognisably the same machine. Yeh script purana hai, sirf platform badalta rehta hai.

Small payouts land first, which is what makes the bigger ask feel safe.

Kya asli part time job kabhi paise maangti hai?

No, and the exceptions people cite are not exceptions. A skills course that charges you is a course, not a job. A platform that charges a subscription to show you listings is selling you a directory, which can be a legitimate product but is not employment either, and we took that distinction apart in our look at what a paid job board actually gets you from India. A recruitment consultant who charges the candidate rather than the employer is at best working a grey area.

The clean rule survives all of it. Money that flows from you to the person offering the work, before the work, is the definition of the thing you are trying to avoid. Genuine part time options do exist and they pay in the other direction: our rundown of part time work from home in India that is actually real is the place to go once you have closed this tab on whoever messaged you.

What if you already gave them your bank account?

Treat this as the serious one, because it is the only red flag on this page that can make you an accused rather than a victim. The Reserve Bank of India’s public warning on money mules is blunt about it. It defines a money mule as someone who moves illegally acquired money for another person, states that acting as one is a crime, and warns that tempting offers to receive or forward money through your account “could land you in jail”. Its instruction is to never let anyone else operate your account and to report the approach at once.

If you have already received and forwarded money for someone, report it yourself before the bank flags it. Our guide to the job offer that wants your bank account sets out what that looks like in practice. Do not wait to see what happens.

Paisa chala gaya to turant kya karein?

Speed is the only thing that helps, so do this in order and do it now. Call 1930, the national cyber crime helpline. File at cybercrime.gov.in. Tell your bank. All three, and ideally within the first hour or two, because the mechanism behind that helpline is designed to freeze money that is still sitting in the receiving account.

That mechanism is real and the government publishes its results. A Press Information Bureau release of 18 December 2024 records that the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System, launched in 2021, had by then saved more than Rs 3,431 crore across more than 9.94 lakh complaints, and that the 1930 helpline runs around the clock. Those figures will have moved since, and they are the last published ones we could confirm, so treat them as the floor rather than the current total.

Keep every screenshot, the UPI reference numbers and the phone number that contacted you. Our step by step on how to file the complaint properly covers what the portal asks for, and if the money went through an app there is more in recovering money lost to an earning app. One warning that belongs here and nowhere near a joke: anybody who contacts you afterwards offering to recover your money for a fee is the second scam, and it targets people who have already lost once.

Which part time jobs are actually worth your time?

The honest answer is that the real ones are slower and duller than the ones in the messages, which is exactly why the messages work. Nobody sends a WhatsApp forward promising Rs 400 for an afternoon of careful work, because nobody needs to. If you want the map rather than a shortcut, our realistic online income ladder lays out which rung is reachable from where you are standing, and the Telegram task scam breakdown shows the same machine in close up.

General information only, not legal or financial advice. If you have lost money, report it through the official channels named above rather than acting on advice from a stranger.

Frequently asked questions

Refundable security deposit maangna scam hai kya?

Almost always, yes. The word refundable is doing the work: it lowers your guard while the money moves in one direction. The test is simple. Ask them to deduct the deposit from your first payout instead of taking it now. A genuine employer has no reason to refuse. Public complaint records are full of deposits of Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 that were never returned.

Can I get my money back after a part time job scam?

Sometimes, and only if you move fast. Call 1930 and file at cybercrime.gov.in within the first hour or two, while the money may still be sitting in the receiving account and can be frozen. Once it has been withdrawn or split across mule accounts, recovery becomes very difficult. Report anyway, because your complaint can link to a wider case.

Is a company legitimate if it sends an offer letter and an employee ID?

Not on its own. An offer letter is a document anybody can produce in ten minutes, and scam operations issue them precisely because they reassure. Verify the employer independently: find the company’s own domain, check the email address matches it, and confirm the office address and registration exist. Judge the company, never the paperwork it sends you.

WhatsApp par job offer aaya hai, kya karein?

Assume it is a scam until it earns otherwise, because no employer in India recruits strangers by cold message from a personal number. Do not click the link, do not join the group. Ask for the company email domain and check it exists independently. If they will not give a domain, or the domain was registered last month, you have your answer.

What are the legal sections these cases are charged under?

In the Delhi case cited above, the E-FIR was registered under sections 318(4) and 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which cover cheating that induces delivery of property and cheating by personation. That matters for one practical reason: this is a criminal offence with real charges attached, not a private dispute, so a police complaint is the correct route and not an overreaction.

Students aur homemakers ko yeh zyada kyun target karte hain?

Because the pitch is built around flexible hours and no experience, which is exactly what someone fitting work around classes or a household is searching for. It is targeting, not naivety, and falling for a well built script says nothing about you. The defence is the same for everyone: no money goes out before money comes in.
