Mercor, Alignerr and Handshake AI: Which Expert Tier Platforms Take Indians

Mercor accepts applicants from India and its own payout policy lists India under Stripe Connect. Alignerr, which is Labelbox, also takes Indian contributors and pays through Deel. Handshake AI does not: you have to be in the United States with valid work authorisation. Two doors open, one shut, and the two open ones are harder than they look.

Something has quietly split in this industry, and most of the guides floating around India have not caught up. The clearest proof arrived in August 2026, when Amazon announced that Mechanical Turk would shut down entirely on 30 September after 21 years of running exactly the sort of task queue this new tier replaced. The platforms our readers know best, Appen and Clickworker and TELUS, are task queues: you qualify once, then pick up whatever appears. The newer names work nothing like that. They read your CV, interview you, and pay you as a specialist on a specific project. The rates are startling. The filter is brutal.

What is the expert tier, and why is it different from Appen and Clickworker?

The generalist platforms hire crowds. They want a lot of people who can follow instructions carefully, and they price accordingly. If you have read our guide to which AI training platforms actually accept India, you already know the shape of that world.

The expert tier hires credentials. The AI labs reached a point where a competent generalist could no longer tell them whether a model answer was any good, because on that subject the model had got better than the generalist. So they started paying radiologists, tax lawyers, structural engineers, competitive programmers and PhD chemists to grade the output instead. Mercor, Alignerr and Handshake AI are the three best known marketplaces built for that.

The practical difference for you is the application. There is no qualification quiz you can grind at until you pass. There is a CV, usually an interview, and a matching process that either finds a project for your background or does not.

The labs now pay domain specialists, because generalists can no longer grade the answers.

Does Mercor accept applicants from India?

Yes. This is the one we can state with the most confidence, because Mercor publishes the answer instead of making you infer it.

Mercor keeps a supported countries policy that splits the world into three lists. The bulk of it, over 130 countries, is paid through Stripe Connect, and India sits on that list. A short second list is paid through Wise instead: Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, Nepal and Turkey. Then there is a third list of places where, in Mercor own wording, operational and payment processing limitations mean it cannot onboard experts or issue contracts at all. India is not on that third list.

Identity is checked once, through a provider called Persona, so expect to show a government photo ID. That is normal. It is not the same thing as a platform asking you for money, which never is. If you are unsure where that line sits, we have written up the red flags that give a fake platform away.

What we have not done is push a rupee through the pipe ourselves, so treat the payout side as documented rather than tested. If Mercor has paid you into an Indian account, tell us how long it took and we will add it here.

Kya Alignerr India se kaam karne deta hai?

Alignerr is the contributor facing brand of Labelbox, which has been in the training data business for years. That pedigree matters: Alignerr is not a two month old website with a Telegram group attached to it.

On eligibility we have to be straight about the quality of our evidence. Independent reviews consistently list India as an accepted country, and they agree on the mechanics: payment runs through Deel on a roughly fortnightly cycle, with a single payment provider enabled per country for compliance reasons.

What we could not do on the day of writing is confirm it from Labelbox itself. Their Alignerr payment FAQ sits on a help subdomain that refused to load for us with a TLS certificate mismatch, which is a configuration problem on their side and nothing you did. So: reported open by everyone who has looked, not confirmed by us at the source. Check the signup page yourself before you spend an evening on the application.

One more thing worth knowing before you start. Alignerr matches you to projects. Being accepted is not the same as being assigned, and the gap between the two is measured in weeks, not hours.

Why can you not join Handshake AI from India?

Because Handshake is, underneath, an American university careers platform, and its AI programme inherited that shape.

The Handshake work authorisation page says participants must be based in the United States with valid work authorisation that Handshake can support. US citizens and green card holders qualify. F-1 students may qualify through CPT or OPT. To be paid as a US person you need an SSN or an ITIN. In its own note on working from outside the United States, the stated position is that non US persons are eligible on an invitation only basis, which in practice means you do not apply, they find you.

So if you are sitting in Pune with a masters in physics, Handshake AI is not a door you can knock on, whatever a YouTube thumbnail says. It is the same trap as Prolific, which blocks India outright, and the honest move is to spend your evenings on platforms that will actually process an application from your address.

How do the three compare on the things that actually matter?

What does the money realistically look like?

The Mercor front page advertises an average contracted rate of 113 dollars an hour, more than 4 million dollars in daily payouts, and individual roles at 90 and 120 dollars an hour. Those are real figures published by the company. They are also a company advertising itself, drawn from a pool that includes American physicians and litigators charging American professional rates.

Reading 113 dollars an hour as your rate would be like reading the average pay at a hospital and expecting it because you can take a pulse. What the number does tell you honestly is the order of magnitude of this tier. Even a fraction of it clears what a rating queue pays, which is why the application is worth an evening even at a low chance of acceptance.

Your rate here is set by how scarce your specific credential is, not by where you live. A generalist with a BA is competing with every generalist on earth and has no leverage. A practising chartered accountant, a doctor with a registration number, a developer with a real competitive programming record, or a fluent speaker of a language the labs are short of, has a great deal of it. We went into this in detail in which skills actually pay Indians on global platforms.

Your CV is the filter here. Specifics beat adjectives every time.

Application ke liye kya chahiye, aur kya bilkul nahi chahiye?

What you need is short and boring:

  • A real CV with specifics on it. Not worked on data projects but the actual model, dataset, court, hospital, client or repository.
  • A working camera and microphone, because the interview stage is not a formality.
  • A government photo ID for the identity check.
  • PAN details eventually, for the same reason any Indian income needs them.
  • Patience across the matching gap, which almost nobody warns you about.

What you must never hand over: a registration fee, a refundable deposit, a training charge, a WhatsApp verification code, your UPI PIN, or money to somebody selling a referral. None of the three platforms in this article charges an applicant anything. If a Telegram account offers to sell you Mercor access, that account is running a scam, full stop.

On the money coming the other way, sort the plumbing out before the first invoice rather than after it. Read how to receive foreign payments in India, and if the sums start to matter, understand where Section 44ADA does and does not apply to you.

Should you drop Outlier and TELUS for this?

No, and treating it as a straight choice is the mistake.

The expert tier has an acceptance rate nobody publishes and a matching delay everybody experiences. Abandon a queue that pays you this month for an application that might pay in six weeks, and you have taken a pay cut for the privilege of waiting. Keep the queue running. Apply upward in the evenings.

The one case where the maths flips is when you genuinely hold a scarce credential. If you are a licensed professional grading rating tasks for a few dollars an hour, you are leaving a lot on the table and a serious Mercor application deserves a weekend. To compare the ground floor properly first, our reviews of Outlier AI in India, DataAnnotation.tech and TELUS Digital rater work are the place to start.

A closing note on the evidence, because this site would rather be useful than confident. Mercor India eligibility is documented and we are comfortable with it. The Alignerr position is reported widely and confirmed by none of the sources we could reach today. The Handshake AI exclusion comes from their own help centre. Where we could not verify something, we have said so rather than rounding it up.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mercor available in India in 2026?

Yes. The published Mercor supported countries policy lists India among the countries paid through Stripe Connect, and India does not appear on its list of locations where it cannot onboard experts. That was the position on 1 September 2026. Eligibility in this sector changes quickly, so check the policy page before you apply.

Kya Mercor ya Alignerr join karne ke liye koi fees deni padti hai?

Nahi. In dono par apply karna free hai. Agar koi registration fee, security deposit, training charge ya referral payment maange, to wo scam hai. Legitimate AI training kaam mein paisa hamesha aapki taraf aata hai, aapse jaata nahi.

Why can Indians not join Handshake AI?

Handshake AI requires participants to be based in the United States with valid work authorisation, and to be paid as a US person you need an SSN or an ITIN. The Handshake documentation says non US persons are eligible on an invitation only basis, so there is no ordinary application route from India.

How is Alignerr different from Outlier or DataAnnotation?

Alignerr, run by Labelbox, matches you to specific projects after an application and assessment, and pays through Deel on a roughly fortnightly cycle. Outlier and DataAnnotation behave more like queues you qualify into. The expert tier pays more per hour but gives you far less certainty that any work will appear.

Kya bina degree ke expert platforms par kaam mil sakta hai?

Mushkil hai, lekin degree hi sab kuch nahi hai. Ye platforms scarce skill dhoondhte hain: strong competitive programming record, professional licence, ya kisi language mein genuine fluency bhi count karti hai. Agar aapke paas sirf general English aur ek laptop hai, to shuruaat generalist platforms se karna zyada practical rahega.

Do I really earn 113 dollars an hour on Mercor?

Almost certainly not. That is the Mercor advertised average contracted rate across its whole talent pool, which includes American doctors and lawyers billing American professional rates. Treat it as the ceiling of the tier rather than a quote. Your rate depends on how scarce your particular credential is.
