Documents Needed Online Work India: Kaunse Zaroori Hain

A young Indian man reviews the documents needed online work india at his home desk.

The documents needed online work India asks for come down to four: PAN, a bank account in your own name, one officially valid address proof, and for US platforms a W-8BEN. Aadhaar is optional in most places. Koi bhi legitimate kaam document ke naam par paisa nahi maangta.

Online work ke liye kaunse documents chahiye?

Shorter list than you are expecting. For work done for an Indian company or platform you need a PAN, a bank account in your own name, and one document that proves who you are and where you live. That is it. For a platform that pays from the United States, add a W-8BEN, which the platform will generate for you inside its own payment settings.

Everything beyond that list is either specific to one platform or is a warning sign. GST registration only arises once you cross the turnover threshold or start exporting services. A passport matters only if the platform verifies identity against one. Baaki sab kuch extra hai.

The confusion is not an accident. The longer the document list sounds, the more official the whole arrangement feels, which is precisely why fee traps recite one at you before they ask for money. Jitni lambi list, utna zyada shak kijiye. A real client asking for payout details is brisk and slightly bored about it, because to them this is admin, not theatre.

What is each document actually for, and who can ask for it?

The useful way to read this table is right to left. Start with the last column, because a document request is almost never wrong in itself. It is the timing and the packaging that give it away.

DocumentWhat it is legitimately forThe rule behind itWhen the request is wrong
PANSo tax is deducted at the normal rate and your ITR matches what was reported Without PAN, tax is deducted at the higher of the specified rate or 20 percent, now section 397(2) of the Income-tax Act 2025 Asked for before any work exists, or asked for together with an OTP
Bank account in your own nameReceiving the payout Account opening KYC under the RBI KYC Master Direction You are asked to open a new account for the employer to use, or to share the debit card or OTP
One officially valid documentProving identity and address once RBI: if the OVD carries both name and address, no other documentary proof is needed A stack of four proofs is demanded, or originals are asked for by courier
W-8BENTelling a US payer you are not a US person IRS Form W-8BEN, given to the withholding agent Anyone other than the platform itself collects it, or charges you to file it
Cancelled cheque or bank proofMatching payout details to the right account Ordinary payout verification, no separate statute A signed blank cheque is demanded rather than a cancelled one

One number in that table is worth pausing on, because most pages still print the old one. The higher deduction rule used to live in sections 206AA and 206CC of the Income-tax Act, 1961. The Income-tax Act, 2025 merged the two into section 397(2) with effect from 1 April 2026, and the PAN provision itself moved from section 139A to section 262. The structure changed and the rates did not: it is still 20 percent in the ordinary case. If a guide quotes you section 206AA today, it has not been updated this year.

Kya Aadhaar dena zaroori hai?

Mostly no, and this surprises people. Aadhaar is not a general requirement for doing online work. It became normal because banks use Aadhaar based e-KYC at account opening, so people assume every counterparty is entitled to it. Your bank already has it. Your client does not need it.

Where you do choose to share it, share the masked version, which hides the first eight digits and shows only the last four. And keep one line absolutely firm: the Aadhaar OTP goes to nobody, ever, for any reason, including someone who says they are from the company’s verification team. Aadhaar number dikhana aur Aadhaar OTP dena, dono bilkul alag cheez hain.

There is a genuine disagreement between RBI’s own pages here, and it is worth knowing which one governs. The KYC Master Direction defines an officially valid document as a passport, driving licence, Voter ID, NREGA job card or the National Population Register letter, with proof of possession of Aadhaar added later, and it does not include PAN in that list. PAN or Form 60 is required separately, as tax information rather than address proof. An older RBI public information page still lists PAN among the OVDs. The Master Direction is the operative rule. We are flagging the conflict rather than quietly picking the tidier answer.

Why do US platforms ask for a W-8BEN?

Because their alternative is to hand nearly a third of your money to the IRS. Under US withholding rules, a payer sending US source income to a foreign person must withhold at 30 percent by default, under sections 1441 to 1443 of the Internal Revenue Code. The W-8BEN is how you certify that you are not a US person and claim any reduced rate the India United States treaty allows.

Three practical points. The form goes to the withholding agent, meaning the platform, and is never filed with the IRS by you. The platform generates it inside its own settings, so you should never be paying a consultant to file one. And it is not an Indian tax document: it does nothing about your Indian tax, which you still owe. Our guide to receiving foreign payments in India covers the rupee side, and FIRA and eFIRA covers the proof your bank issues afterwards.

Kaunsi document request red flag hai?

The pattern is consistent enough to be a checklist. A request is a red flag when money moves with it: a document verification charge, a processing fee, a police verification fee. Those labels recur across dated complaints, including several against one consultancy where complainants from 2021 and 2022 describe paying a registration amount and then being refused payment after the work was done. Verification is something an employer pays for, not something it bills you for.

It is also a red flag when someone wants a new bank account opened in your name for the company’s use, which is how a mule account gets built out of an ordinary job seeker, or when the ask includes your debit card number, your net banking password or any OTP. No payout has ever required an OTP from you. Money arriving needs your account number. Money leaving needs your OTP, and if they are asking, guess which one is about to happen.

Originals by courier is the third one. A genuine employer works from a scan or a verified e-document. If a job wants your physical PAN card in an envelope, it is not onboarding you, it is collecting you. The same instinct that flags handwriting jobs from home and the wider set of part time job scam signs applies cleanly here.

Documents share kar diye. Ab kya karein?

First, work out what was actually exposed. A masked Aadhaar copy sitting in someone’s WhatsApp is a smaller problem than a full PAN, a signed cheque and a selfie in the same folder, which is the combination used to open accounts and take loans in other people’s names. Check your credit report for loans you did not take, and check your Annual Information Statement on the income tax portal for income reported against your PAN that is not yours.

If money has already moved, or if you believe your identity is being used, call 1930 and file on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal the same day. For a refund claim against a named company, the National Consumer Helpline takes complaints on 1915 between 8am and 8pm. Our walkthrough on reporting online fraud in India covers the portal forms step by step. Tell your bank in writing as well, not only on the phone, so there is a dated record.

Then change the thing that made it easy. Keep one folder of masked copies for sharing and never send the originals from your gallery in a hurry. If you are still deciding what work to chase in the first place, our online income ladder for India and the PAN card rules for online earning are the two pages worth reading before you hand anything to anybody.

Frequently asked questions

Kya PAN card ke bina online work kar sakte hain?

You can work, but you will be paid less. Without PAN, tax is deducted at the higher of the specified rate or 20 percent under section 397(2) of the Income-tax Act 2025, which replaced section 206AA on 1 April 2026, and you cannot easily claim it back at filing because the deduction will not map to your record. Getting a PAN is cheaper than the shortfall.

Is a W-8BEN needed for Upwork, Fiverr and AI training platforms?

For platforms that pay from the United States, yes, and they generate it inside their own payment settings. It certifies you are not a US person so the payer does not withhold at the default 30 percent. You never file it with the IRS yourself and you should never pay anyone to submit it.

Company documents ke verification ke liye paise maang rahi hai. Normal hai?

No. Verification is a cost the employer carries. A document verification charge, processing fee or police verification fee billed to the applicant is one of the most repeated labels in dated job fraud complaints. Any money moving from you before work moves to you ends the conversation.

Is Aadhaar compulsory for online work in India?

Generally no. Your bank uses it at account opening, but a client or platform paying you for work usually has no need for it. Where you share it, share the masked version showing only the last four digits, and never share the Aadhaar OTP with anyone for any reason.

What is the difference between a cancelled cheque and a signed blank cheque?

A cancelled cheque has two lines drawn across it and the word cancelled written on it, so it proves your account details and cannot be banked. A signed blank cheque can be filled in for any amount and presented. A legitimate payout process only ever needs the first one.

Someone has my PAN and Aadhaar. What should I check first?

Check your credit report for loans or cards you did not apply for, and your Annual Information Statement on the income tax portal for income reported against your PAN that you did not earn. If either shows something unfamiliar, file on the cyber crime portal and tell your bank in writing.
