Remotasks in India 2026: Still Online, But Scale AI Has Moved On

Remotasks is still online in 2026 and its own country list still names India, but Scale AI has said the platform stayed open only to existing Indian contributors. We could not confirm from inside India on the day of writing whether new signups go through. The larger point is that Scale has quietly moved its crowd work somewhere else.

Can you actually sign up for Remotasks from India in 2026?

The honest answer is that the two sources you would most want to trust disagree with each other. So here are both, rather than the one that makes a tidier headline.

Remotasks runs a help page called Where Is Remotasks Available?. It lists India in a run of just over a hundred countries, has a Sign Up button at the bottom, and a cheerful note about still expanding. If that were the end of it, this article would be four sentences long.

Here is the catch. That page is bylined 29 January 2022, the footer still reads copyright 2023, and the list includes Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan. Scale AI shut Remotasks down completely in all three of those countries in March 2024. A country list that still advertises three markets it closed two years ago cannot tell you anything trustworthy about the fourth.

Why does every other blog say Indian signups are closed?

Because they are all quoting the same paragraph, and most of them do not mention that.

In March 2024, Rest of World reported that Remotasks had dropped entire countries with no warning. Kenyan workers lost access on 7 March with no notice at all. Scale later said notices had gone out three weeks in advance and that Kenyan contractors missed them because of “operational errors”. Nigeria and Pakistan were shut as well, and Thailand, Vietnam and Poland had new signups halted. The official explanation was “enhanced security protocols”, which in plainer language meant Scale had decided too many people in those countries were gaming the platform.

The sentence that then travelled into a hundred listicles was Scale’s own: Remotasks “remains fully available to existing contractors in Poland, India, Thailand, and Vietnam”. Read it twice. It says existing. A company that wanted to say new signups were open would have said new signups were open. So the conclusion that India closed to newcomers is very probably right. It is also still an inference drawn from a single sentence given to a reporter in March 2024, and we would rather tell you that than dress it up as confirmed fact.

You can settle it for yourself in about a minute. Open the Remotasks signup page on your normal connection, no VPN. If your location is blocked you get a message saying they are not accepting new contributors from your area, usually pointing you at Outlier instead. If you get a signup form, you are in. Do not use a VPN to force it. Remotasks’ own help page advises against one, and this is a company that closed three countries over suspected fraud.

Interim chief executive Jason Droege said the company had “ramped up its generative AI capacity too quickly” and folded sixteen internal groups into five. None of that is about India specifically. All of it decides whether there is a queue for you to work in. Crowd platforms almost never announce that the work has dried up. The queue simply stays empty, your account stays open, and you keep refreshing.

What do Remotasks’ own numbers say about the money?

The Remotasks homepage advertises three figures side by side: 90 plus countries, 240,000 plus total taskers, and $15 million in total earnings. They sit next to each other as selling points, which suggests nobody did the division.

Fifteen million dollars spread across 240,000 taskers is about $62 each. That is roughly 5,900 rupees at about 95 rupees to the dollar. Not per month. Across the entire life of the platform, for the average person who ever signed up.

In fairness the average is crude. Committed taskers earn far more, and most signups finish one training module and never return, which drags the mean down hard. The figure may be stale too, since the page’s copyright says 2023. But Remotasks chose to put it on its own front page as a boast, and it is not the boast of a platform where people are building an income.

One more thing we noticed on that visit: the homepage Frequently Asked Questions block still contains the website template placeholder text, complete with “Heading 1” and “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”. A marketing page that nobody has edited since the template was installed tells you roughly where this product sits on Scale’s list of priorities.

How does Remotasks pay, and what actually reaches an Indian bank?

Remotasks pays weekly, through PayPal or AirTM. Both work from India. Both cost you something on the way in.

PayPal charges 4.4 percent plus $0.30 on an international commercial payment, adds a currency conversion markup of roughly 3 to 4 percent over the mid market rate, and 18 percent GST applies on its fees. Our own fee maths on PayPal, Payoneer and Wise puts the all in cost between about 7.4 and 9 percent. PayPal India also cannot hold a balance, so money sweeps automatically to your linked bank account.

AirTM is available in India and supports direct withdrawal to Indian bank accounts. The part worth knowing before you use it: AirTM also runs a peer to peer cashier system, which means rupees can land in your account from a private individual rather than from a company. Indian users have reported bank accounts being frozen over unexplained third party deposits. If you use AirTM, use the direct withdrawal route rather than a P2P cashier.

There is an active black market in AI training platform accounts, documented by AlgorithmWatch, in which accounts from eligible countries are sold or rented to people in blocked ones. It gets the account banned, you lose whatever you paid, and you have handed your identity documents to a stranger. Yeh sabse mehnga shortcut hai.

What should an Indian use instead in 2026?

If you are working down this list, start with the platform that is definitely open rather than the one that might be. One application to Outlier or Appen today beats a week of refreshing a Remotasks signup page. And if a listicle sent you here after recommending Prolific, that is a separate closed door: Prolific does not accept India either.

So is Remotasks worth trying at all?

If the signup page opens for you, it costs you an evening to find out and there is no fee to join. A legitimate platform never charges you to start work, and Remotasks does not.

Just go in with the right expectation. This is a platform whose parent company lost three of its biggest customers in a fortnight, cut a seventh of its staff, ended 500 contractor agreements, halved its revenue outlook and is now selling AI consulting to enterprises and governments instead. The crowd work business that Remotasks was built to feed is not the business Scale is trying to be in any more. Treat it as a free lottery ticket, and put your actual effort into a platform that is still hiring.
