PayPal vs Payoneer vs Wise for Indian Freelancers: The Real Fee Maths

Hands holding a card beside a laptop, comparing PayPal, Payoneer and Wise fees in India

On a $1,000 payment into India, Wise costs about $19 to $21.50, Payoneer about $20 to $30, and PayPal about $74 to $90. That is a difference of over $50 on a single invoice, for money that does exactly the same thing when it arrives. PayPal is roughly four times more expensive than the alternatives and remains the default recommendation in most Indian freelancing guides.

This article exists because that advice costs people real money every month.

The headline comparison

Payoneer$20 to $302% to 3%About 2% to 3% below mid marketFree digital FIRA
PayPal$74 to $907.4% to 9%Poor, with a wide spreadVaries

Two columns matter and most comparisons only show one. The headline fee is what gets advertised. The exchange rate markup is where a provider quietly takes a second bite, and it is often larger than the fee itself.

The advertised fee is only half the cost. The exchange rate is the other half.

Why the exchange rate matters as much as the fee

Every provider converts your dollars to rupees at some rate. The honest benchmark is the mid market rate, which is the real rate you would see on a currency chart, with no markup.

Wise prices close to that, typically within half a percent to one percent, and charges a visible conversion fee on top. You can see exactly what you are paying. Payoneer’s rate sits around two to three percent below mid market, and that gap is not presented as a fee, it is simply built into the number you receive. PayPal’s spread is wider still, on top of the highest headline fee of the three.

This is why comparing only advertised fees is misleading. A provider with a low fee and a bad rate can cost more than one with a higher fee and an honest rate.

The FIRA question, which is not a small detail

Every foreign payment you receive should be backed by a Foreign Inward Remittance Advice. You need it for return filing, GST audits and export documentation.

Payoneer includes a free digital FIRA, which is genuinely convenient if you receive many payments. Wise charges for each one, which adds up if your income arrives in small frequent amounts rather than a few large ones. Factor this in before assuming the cheapest headline rate wins for your situation. There is more detail in FIRA and eFIRA.

So which should you actually use?

Use Wise if

  • Your clients pay you directly against an invoice
  • You receive fewer, larger payments rather than many small ones
  • You want the most transparent pricing and the closest thing to the real exchange rate
  • You value seeing exactly what was deducted and why

Use Payoneer if

  • Your income comes through marketplaces such as Upwork, Fiverr or Amazon, which integrate with it directly
  • You receive frequent payments and want a free FIRA for each
  • You are being paid by a platform that offers Payoneer as a built in option, where it is often the path of least friction

Use PayPal only if

  • A client refuses every alternative and the work is worth the cost anyway

That is the entire list. PayPal is not a scam and it is not broken, it is simply expensive, and the gap is large enough that it should be your last choice rather than your first.

Marketplace work and direct client work point to different answers.

A worked example

Suppose you earn $1,000 a month from a foreign client for a year.

  • Through Wise, at roughly 2%, you lose in the region of $240 across the year.
  • Through Payoneer, at roughly 2.5%, somewhere near $300.
  • Through PayPal, at roughly 8%, close to $960.

That last figure is most of a month’s income, spent on the privilege of using the option everybody defaults to. Those are approximations rather than quotes, and your exact numbers depend on the payment route and currencies involved, but the ranking does not change.

Toh sabse sasta option kaunsa hai?

For direct client invoices, Wise. For marketplace payouts, Payoneer, both because of the integration and because the free FIRA saves real hassle. PayPal last, and only when you have no choice.

Open both Wise and Payoneer. They are free to hold and you will probably need each at different times. Then read receiving foreign payments in India for the paperwork side, which is the part people neglect until it becomes urgent.

How to compare two providers yourself, in five minutes

Published comparisons go stale, this one included. The durable skill is being able to check the current position yourself, because the numbers move and the provider that was cheapest last year may not be this year.

  1. Find the real mid market rate first. Search the currency pair and note the rate with no provider involved. This is your benchmark and everything is measured against it.
  2. Get a full quote for a specific amount from each provider, not a fee percentage from a marketing page. Use a realistic figure like $500 or $1,000.
  3. Compare what actually arrives in rupees, not the advertised fee. This is the only number that matters, and it captures the exchange rate markup that the fee alone hides.
  4. Add the FIRA cost. If a provider charges per document and you receive twelve payments a year, that is twelve charges.
  5. Check the minimum withdrawal and how long the transfer takes. A slightly cheaper provider that holds your money longer may not be cheaper in any way that matters to you.

Step 3 is the one that catches people. A provider can advertise a lower fee than a competitor and still deliver fewer rupees, because the conversion rate is where the second, larger deduction hides. Always compare the landed amount.

Why is PayPal so expensive in India?

It combines the highest headline fee of the three with a wide exchange rate spread. The two together push the effective cost to roughly 7.4% to 9%.

Wise for direct client invoices, because of transparent pricing and a near mid market rate. Payoneer for marketplace payouts, because of the integration and the free digital FIRA.

Does Wise give a FIRA for Indian freelancers?

Wise issues them but charges per document. Payoneer includes a free digital FIRA, which matters if you receive many smaller payments.
