Online Tutoring Jobs From Home: What Indian Tutors Report

An Indian woman works at her desk, finding legitimate online tutoring jobs from home to earn extra income.

Online tutoring jobs from home are real in India, but the pay depends on where your students are. Filo pays Indian tutors Rs 110 to Rs 140 an hour for school subjects, while Preply lets you set a dollar rate and keeps 18 to 33 percent. Indian tutors on Reddit report the hard part is landing a first student.

Are online tutoring jobs from home actually real?

Yes, which already puts this category ahead of most things advertised as work from home. Somebody on the other side of the screen needs help with quadratic equations, and somebody pays for it. The catch is structural rather than criminal. Tutoring platforms are marketplaces, so being approved is not the same as being booked, and the ads promising Rs 50,000 a month for teaching from your sofa tend to skip the months in between.

There are two very different kinds of platform here. Indian apps such as Filo pay a fixed rupee rate for every minute you teach, and the student supply is handled for you. Global marketplaces such as Preply let you set your own price in dollars, but you compete for students with tutors from every other country, and nobody sends you a single booking.

Which tutoring platforms accept Indian tutors, and what do they pay?

We checked each platform’s own help or tutor page on 14 September 2026. Where a figure comes from a platform’s own page it is in the table; where only third party blogs carry it, it is left out.

PlatformWho can tutorHow you are paidSource
FiloGraduate degree or similar; final year undergraduates considered in some casesPer minute of teaching: Rs 140 an hour for class 11 and 12 physics, chemistry, biology and maths; Rs 110 an hour for class 9 and 10 and for government job examsFilo tutor page
PreplyFree to sign up, with no fee to host a profileYou set the rate. Trial lessons with a new student carry 100% commission; later lessons 33% for new tutors, 28% after 20 hours, falling to 18%Preply commission model
CamblyNative English speakers aged 18 or overNot listed on the eligibility pageCambly help centre
UrbanProFree profile, but a premium membership is needed to answer student enquiriesStudents pay you directly; UrbanPro deducts coins per enquiry or demo and refunds them when the enquiry convertsUrbanPro help centre
italkiLanguage teachers onlyPlatform fee varies by lesson type, package size and teacher performanceitalki help centre

Two things jump out. Cambly’s rule is short and absolute, and most Indian English teachers will not clear it however good their English is. And Filo is the only platform on the list that tells you your hourly rate before you start, which is either reassuring or sobering, depending on what the ad promised you.

How much do you actually keep from a Preply lesson?

Preply’s headline commission sounds simple until you notice that the first lesson with every new student pays you nothing. Here is a worked month for a new maths tutor, using Preply’s own commission tiers and its withdrawal fees for India. The inputs: a rate of $10 an hour, 20 lessons in the month, five of them trials with new students, and a bank transfer withdrawal in rupees.

StepCalculationResult
Five trial lessons5 x $10, commission 100%$0
Fifteen regular lessons15 x $10 x 0.67 (33% commission while under 20 hours)$100.50
Bank transfer to India$0.59 fixed plus 0.46% of $100.50minus $1.05
Reaches your account$99.45 at roughly Rs 95.7 to the dollar in mid September 2026about Rs 9,500

Now the same 20 hours on Filo at the class 11 and 12 rate: 20 x Rs 140 is Rs 2,800. On paper Preply wins by more than three times. In practice the Preply number only exists once 20 bookings exist, and the accounts below suggest that is the expensive part. At the $6 an hour one new Indian tutor dropped to, the same month comes to about $60 before fees. Exchange rates move, so treat the rupee figure as a snapshot rather than a promise.

Payout method matters more than people expect. Preply lists bank transfer to India in INR with a minimum of $10 and a maximum of $3,000 per transaction, PayPal at 2% capped at $20, and Payoneer from a $20 minimum. For the wider trade offs between these routes, our comparison of PayPal, Payoneer and Wise for Indian earners walks through the conversion costs.

What do Indian tutors who tried this actually report?

We read eight public Reddit threads posted between October 2025 and August 2026, six on r/Preply and one each on r/Indian_Academia and r/WorkingStudentPh, including the replies where they disputed the original post. These are what individual tutors say happened to them. They are not platform statistics, and none of them tells you what you will earn.

  • An Indian tutor offering Python and AI lessons wrote in November 2025 that after a couple of months on Preply, and cutting the price from $8 to $6, they had received one trial lesson.
  • An Indian maths tutor whose whole income came through Preply asked for alternatives in November 2025 and said many other platforms required a native speaker. Replies pushed back that Preply was not going down, and that Reddit collects the unhappiest tutors.
  • In July 2026 a tutor described helping a friend from India with a teaching background set up an English profile that drew nine views in seven days, even after lowering the price. Replies called English the most saturated subject on the platform and suggested a niche.
  • Cutting the other way, a tutor in the Philippines teaching maths reported in June 2026 that the first student took two weeks and several price cuts, after which, they said, more bookings followed. They named Indian tutors as their main competition in maths.
  • In July 2026 a tutor reported that Skrill suspended their account right after a Preply payout arrived and held the balance while it asked for documents again.

The pattern is consistent: approval is quick, the first booking is slow, and the tutors who report it working found a narrow subject or exam rather than a general English profile. One August 2026 poster who had earned Preply’s Super Tutor badge still reported a sharp summer slump and said italki income was covering the bills that month, which is the best argument we saw for not relying on a single platform. Where the accounts agree with the official pages is on the trial lesson: every tutor who mentioned it confirmed it pays nothing. What they add is time: no help page says how long an unknown profile waits, and that wait is most of the story.

Is Filo better than Preply for Indian tutors?

Filo ki payment rupees mein aati hai aur rate pehle se fixed hai, so there is no pricing game to play. Its tutor page says payouts run in the first week of each month through a link in the app, withdrawals need earnings above Rs 100 and seven days of activity that month, and the transfer takes five to six business days. The trade is a ceiling: Rs 140 an hour is what a strong class 12 physics tutor earns there, full stop.

What happened to Chegg expert work in India?

The company cut about 45% of its workforce in October 2025, according to Fox Business, citing AI tools and falling search traffic. Several tutoring blogs report that its India question and answer expert operation closed in March 2026. We could not confirm that date from Chegg itself, so treat Chegg as unavailable to new Indian experts unless its own site says otherwise, and be wary of anyone selling you a Chegg account or a guaranteed onboarding slot.

UrbanPro pe paisa lagta hai kya?

Profile banana free hai, but replying to students is not. UrbanPro’s help centre says a premium membership is required to respond to enquiries, and that coins are deducted when you respond to an enquiry or a demo is booked, then credited back when the enquiry becomes a student. If the student picks someone else, the coins stay spent. That model suits a tutor with a local reputation and a high conversion rate far better than an 18 year old new to the city, which was exactly the worry in an April 2026 r/Indian_Academia thread. One reply there described a supposed class 10 student who turned out to be an adult sending inappropriate messages. For online classes with strangers, keep all contact inside the platform and do not share your phone number or address.

How do you tell a real tutoring job from a fee scam?

The rule that works across this whole site works here too: genuine tutoring platforms charge a commission on lessons you have taught, or sell optional lead credits you can see the price of before you buy. A WhatsApp message offering a guaranteed tutoring job after a registration fee, a training kit or a security deposit is not a tutoring job. Do not pay it. If you have already paid, call 1930 and file a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal as quickly as you can.

Tutoring fits naturally on the online income ladder as a skill based rung rather than a first click job,, one of the skills that pay Indians on global platforms. Our guides to part time work from home and online work for homemakers cover fitting it around other commitments.

Do you pay tax on tutoring income from these platforms?

Yes. Money earned from Filo, Preply or any other platform is income, and it is taxable in India whether it arrives in rupees or dollars. Getting your PAN linked before payouts start avoids problems later, which our page on PAN and online earnings explains, and our breakdown of tax on small online earnings covers what happens below the basic exemption. This is general information, not tax advice; for your own position, speak to a chartered accountant.

Frequently asked questions

Can a college student in India become an online tutor?

On Filo, final year undergraduates are considered in some cases, but a graduate degree is the stated requirement. Preply has no degree rule, but you are competing for bookings with experienced tutors worldwide.

Preply par first student kitne din mein milta hai?

Preply does not publish a figure. Tutors on Reddit report anything from two weeks to several months, and the slower accounts usually describe a general profile rather than a specific exam or subject niche.

Does Cambly accept Indian tutors?

Cambly’s help centre says tutors must be native English speakers aged 18 or over. It does not list countries, but most Indian applicants will not meet the native speaker rule.

How does Preply pay tutors in India?

Preply lists bank transfer to India in rupees with a $0.59 fee plus 0.46% conversion, and a $10 minimum, alongside Wise, PayPal, Payoneer and Skrill, which are paid in dollars.

Kya tutoring app join karne ke liye fees deni padti hai?

Filo and Preply charge nothing to join and earn through the lessons you teach. UrbanPro needs a paid premium membership to reply to students. A recruiter asking for a registration fee or deposit is a scam sign.

Is Chegg still hiring subject experts from India?

Chegg cut about 45% of its staff in October 2025, and tutoring blogs report its India expert operation closed in March 2026. We could not confirm that date from Chegg, so check its own site before trusting any offer.
